Readiness before ambition

The most common mistake in AI strategy is choosing an ambition before checking whether the organisation can carry it. Ambition without readiness produces expensive pilots that never scale.

Assess three levels first

  • The board — is there shared fluency at the top, or will decisions stall because half the room cannot judge the trade-offs?
  • The company — data, systems, and workflows: what is genuinely in place versus what exists on a slide?
  • Each discipline — finance, operations, HR, legal and the rest each start from a different place. A single company-wide ambition hides that.

Then set ambition to match

Readiness is not a gate you pass once. It is a map that tells you where to be bold and where to build first. In a discipline that is ready, set a stretching target and move. In one that is not, the first target is readiness itself — data quality, skills, a governance path.

This is unglamorous, and it is exactly why it works. Leaders who match ambition to readiness move faster in the second year, because the foundation under the ambition is real. The ones who skip it spend that year explaining why the pilot never became a capability.
